Engineering the frontier of music and code

My journey into music technology began in 1990, captivated by the possibilities of a MIDI sequencer. This early fascination grew into a lifelong pursuit at the intersection of music and code. In the early 2000s, I sought to democratize computer music in Korea by producing a popular series of video lectures and founding VSTGURU, one of the country's first online communities dedicated to the craft.

Eager to expand my horizons, I moved to the United States in 2009 to pursue a PhD at Stanford University’s Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA). My research on web-based collaborative music systems paved the way for my involvement in Google’s Web Audio API project. This work eventually led me to join Google in 2014, where I began engineering the audio engine that powers the Chrome browser.

Currently, I serve as a Tech Lead Manager at Google, leading engineering teams while also driving global standards as a co-chair of the W3C Audio Working Group. Beyond the industry, I remain deeply connected to academia, teaching and mentoring the next generation of music technologists at my alma mater.
